Birth declaration
When do you need to declare birth?
The birth of a child must be reported to the municipality where the child was born within three days of birth. To avoid long waiting times, make an appointment first. In Vianen, it is possible to make the declaration at home. For more information, see: www.vianen.nl

Who may/should declare birth?
The father is obliged to make the birth declaration. The mother is authorized to make the declaration. If there is no father or he cannot make the declaration, the obligation to declare the birth lies with the person who was present at the birth. If he cannot, the obligation passes to the occupant of the house or the head of a hospital where the child was born. In the absence of the authorized or obligated persons or when no declaration is made at all, the declaration is made by or on behalf of the mayor of the place where the baby was born.
Birth certificate
A deed is drawn up of the birth which is recorded in the registers of civil status. The birth certificate is an authentic deed prepared by a civil registrar. This deed is proof that a person was born.
The choice of surname
Nowadays, parents are allowed to decide which surname the children will have.
Not married or registered partner?
If the mother is not married or has not registered a partnership, also read the information on recognition of the child born and choice of name.
