What is the birth TENS?
The birth TENS is a natural form of pain relief you can use during labor. It consists of four sticky electrodes that you stick on your lower back. Coupled with the TENS device, light pulses of electricity are delivered. The electrical stimulation of the nerve pathways reduces the transmission of pain signals to your brain.
Use of the birth TENS
You can use the birthTENS on 2 modes. The continuous basic mode stimulates the production of Endorphins. Your body’s own painkiller. You can also use the ‘BOOST’ button. This blocks pain stimuli so you can experience less pain from the contractions.
When to use
BirthTENS has no adverse effect on the health of you or your baby. One advantage is that you can use this form of pain relief even during a home birth. The only disadvantage could be that you cannot use the birthTENS in combination with water such as in a bath. Should you suffer from cardiac arrhythmias, epileptic conditions or have a pacemaker? Then the use of the birthTENS is not recommended.

Costs and practicalities
You rent the birthTENS for a period of 5 weeks (weeks 37 to 42) for €59.00.
Many health insurance companies reimburse (part of) the cost. Check with your own insurance if you are eligible for this. You will receive an invoice that you can submit to your health insurance company.
TENS are picked up and returned to the practice.
